Fruit Market Reports
February 2012

The second month of the year has come already and the show has only just started. It's all drama at TFB Summer–Selection Fruit Theatre: Envy, love, loss, triumph! Amongst the vibrant backdrop of the great Australian land our fruity actors play their essential parts in making the February fruit market fantastic.

Stonefruit Symphony: Like notes on music sheets, the range of peaches and nectarines floats and drifts into and out of our Boxes. Coming in white and yellow they interchange daily. Introducing: Amber jewel Plum. Nothing but rave review across the board for this up and coming star; with different varieties popping up throughout the month, we're sure to get a great show.

Brooding Bananas: Food for thought: It was around this time that Cyclone Yasi swept its way through Queensland. Whilst we're happy to say that we seem to be back on track with good supply and growing conditions, we are ever-mindful that this 3 month window between now and April is when dramatic weather is likely to pick up. But the show must go on and these Bananas are taking it all in stride.

Overacting–Oranges: The veteran of the stage Valencias are still here, still sporting that green coat to portray innocence and unripeness. A classic method actor, this fruit will say it's young forever, but we keep them in our Boxes despite the costume, knowing that some of the best things only come with age.

Aria Apples: Music to the ears: we are starting the new season Royal Gala with Red Delicious and Granny Smiths coming in mid–February.

Kiwi Question: To kiwi or not to kiwi? – that is the question. Answer: To Kiwi! They're still here and they're raring to go. Go on, have a kiwi - Hamlet would do it.

Pears Pantomime: These guys will have you off your chair in Mid–feb with William pears stealing the scene from Packham pears.

Craving a little something extra?

Mastermind Mangoes: To put things in perspective: this fruit would eat you and everyone you love if it had the chance- get into them before they grow feet, they're still there through Feb.

Grape Opera: The Diva this month, our fantastic green seedless Menindees are open for preference! Red seedless option is Red Flame, should be available mid Feb. Then we will change over from green Menindee to Thompson and from red flame to crimson seedless.

Shakespearean Strawberries: We're on Victorian crops and will be continuing throughout Feb.

Passionfruit: In reasonable supply and price.

Nutrition Nuggets from the Fruity Fact File #3: The Banana:

The average Glycemic Index of bananas is 52, and even less for under–ripe bananas as they have higher starch content and lower sugar content. A GI rating of 52 is classified as quite low, so a banana a day is your first step to low blood sugar levels.
