Fruit Market Reports
January 2012
Welcome back! We missed you! We know it's hard to get back in the swing of things after the Christmas break, but we're going to try and help you ring in this new year with a sense of excitement, happiness and healthiness. With summer really starting to get sausages sizzling, drinks emptied and sunscreen slip, slop and slapped- we welcome summer fruits to our Boxes and our plates. Feast your eyes on the treat's we'll be sending you in your Boxes this month!
Stone-faced 'til Saturday: Turn that frown upside down with our selection of juicy peaches and succulent nectarines. From week to week you will see white or yellow flesh, sometimes a combination of both, just to shake things up a bit. New season plums are gradually arriving in the markets and can be included upon request. They've been a little petulant lately so we will keep a close eye on their progression and they will hopefully become a regular Fruit Box item at the end of the month.
Brightening up Bananas: The supply of bananas in the market has been fantastic lately, so look forward to seeing them in your Box this month and putting a big yellow smile on your dial.
Already feeling awesome Apples: Crunchy Sundowners and some Red Delicious are still holding the apple front for this month. Granny Smiths have been doing their bit and supporting the reds before the start of new season apples. Other varieties are available on request. Look forward to more variety by the start of February, with Royal Galas first off the bat.
Ok, I'm ready for Oranges: Juicy Valencia oranges are still squeezing their way into our boxes, so you can enjoy a fresh orange juice when you get to work, scaring your co-workers with an orange slice smile and using the skin as a fruity pen grip.
The Kiwis have come! Tasty Kiwi fruit are still multiplying, enjoy a zesty kiwi or two this month.
It's Pear war! Say goodbye to Bosc pears- fickle as it may seem, we have parted ways for the season in favor of our seductive summer fruits. Packham pears are further providing excitement to our summer menus, but will also be overthrown by the delicious Green William by late January.
Great to see those Grapes: These magnificent little gems are available upon request this month. Better yet, we are looking to include Green Menindee Seedless grapes in our Boxes to join the fruit party by the end of this month.
Stoic Strawberries: These wonderful fruits are currently available in the Southern regions of Australia. Whilst rain and the recent heat have affected some crops, don't worry! We will keep an eye on quality on a weekly basis.
Prefer a bit of Passion? Passionfruit is starting to come back and will be available as an extra this month, so don't miss out on them! Mangoes have flooded the markets and are still available as an extra to get you into the swing of summer again.
Nutrition Nuggets from the Fruity Fact File #2
Generous Grapes: Whilst Grapes are high in vitamin C and fibre, are about 80% water and are naturally low in sodium, they are better known for their antioxidant levels. Grapes of all colours contain significant amounts of antioxidant (antioxidant capacity of 1789- 2016!) which reduce oxidative stress. Grapes also promote cardiovascular heath by reducing inflammation, inhibiting oxidation of LDL ('bad' cholesterol), preventing platelet aggregation (which can lead to clot formation) and increasing arterial flexibility, which can lower blood pressure.
