Market Report - July 2011
Bursting into the wintry scene of July's flavourful Fruit Box mix are delicious southern state mandarins! Moving from the early season northern region of Australia, July's mandarins include both the Imperial and Hickson varieties. The Imperial, with its smooth glossy and easy to peal skin combined with an abundance of colour and flavour, is joined by the Hickson which has a slightly reddish exterior and high juice content. Other popular varieties that will emerge, on your fruit delivery menus, as the southern season unfolds include the Afourer, Murcott, Clementine and Ellandale.
With her rosy blush and distinguishable bite the Pink Lady has made a dashing return to the apple stage. Sitting alongside the honey-sweet Fuji and deep crimson hue of the Red Delicious, this month's apple variety reads like a who's - who of the apple world! Due to low yielding crops, Granny Smith apples have tightened up in the market and as a result will only be included as a customer preference as will the Royal Gala. Also look out for the new season Sundowner which will arrive later in the month.
BANANA UPDATE
As cold temperatures continue to hamper banana production post cyclone Yasi, supply is still extremely low. We are witnessing record prices in the market; however there is some positive news on the horizon. Cameron Mackay president of the Australian Banana Growers Council is happy with the way the trees in FNQ are responding to their re-growth. He believes that we will notice an increase in volume during September, while October will provide a healthy amount of supply. By November his prediction is that growing conditions will be back to full production with good quality produce filtering through the markets. Until quantities resume to an acceptable level we will continue to supply bananas as a preference only item. Please contact our customer service team should you want to include bananas as part of your weekly office mix!
Juicy Navel orange continue to provide a citrus boost, while the tangerine and grapefruit combination of the TangeloTangelo is proving to be a popular inclusion through the winter months. Also providing its year round goodness is the zesty Kiwi fruit, running alongside the crisp Packham Pear and rustic Beurre Bosc which are all adding plenty of flavour to July's mix.
Crimson Grapes are finishing up for the season, however delicious Queensland strawberries are now in the mix and can be included upon request along with tangy passionfruit and refreshingly juicy nashi pears.
