Market Report - Feb 2011 - update
The beginning to the New Year has been an exceptionally trying time for many Australians. Our farmers across the Eastern seaboard have endured yet another momentous setback, yet true to form their resilience and courage will see them fight another day. For everyone that has been affected by the floods our sincere thoughts are with you…
February brings with it its challenges. Due to the excessive rain, pre Christmas hale, and at times unwavering heat, some lines of fruit and vegetables will vary in quality breaking down earlier than expected. They may also display exterior markings that we do not usually see. However through all this adversity our farmers have somehow also been able to produce some outstanding fruit that we are fortunately accustomed to throughout Australia all year round!
A delicious selection of white & yellow flesh peaches and nectarines are a refreshing inclusion in our menus. New season Clingstone peaches will slowly be introduced pending market availability and quality. Again some stone fruit may breakdown earlier than we would expect however we will endeavour to provide the best quality fruits available in the market.
New season plums will be arriving in the stands over the coming weeks. We will keep a close eye on their progression and they will most certainly become a regular Fruit Box item as soon as consistent quality is achieved.
As roads from FNQ were cut-off due to the floods, banana supply was limited. As the roads re-open we should see good supply return to the markets. Heavy rains will also mean markings on the banana’s exterior however this does not affect its eating quality.
February will bring with it new season apples. Royal Galas will be the first of the apple lines filtering through over the next few weeks followed by new season Granny Smiths. As the season continues more varieties will appear. Once again heavy rains have impacted this seasons crops yet the extent to which this has affected the 2011 season will unfold as the year progresses.
William pears are a welcome inclusion and should continue until replaced by the Packham variety in March / April. Similarly we will see a mix of both Valencia and Navel oranges until new season Navels will take over.
Kiwifruit continue to provide flavour to our boxes while passionfruit are also being included as a menu item pending quality and availability.
Heat, rain and humidity have understandably affected our delicate strawberry crops yet strawberries will continue to be included as good produce continues to filter through the markets. In the event that strawberry quality declines we may replace punnets with delicious blueberries. Other fruits available upon request are scrumptious new season seedless grapes. As the weeks progress, their quality will continue to improve and their goodness will only magnify.
