Fruit Market Reports
December 2011
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Hogmanay or Thankful for Fruit Day (our favourite at TFB), the end of the year is a time of growth and warmth in Australia; and that means tropical fruit season! With a fabulous selection in your Box, whip up a fruit salad, try a slice of peach or pear in champagne at the end of year celebrations or a festive bowl of fruit punch!
Stone fruit: Naughty Nectarines and Nice Peaches have come into our boxes and settled for the summer. They come in white or yellow flesh and come in so many different varieties; you'll be delighted with the different skin tones, sweetness, tartness or firmness to your stone fruit every week! Plums will be similar; starting in late December/ early January, they will be smaller to start with, then get bigger and sweeter as they become in good supply
Nutrition Nuggets from the Fruity Fact File #1: The Power of Peaches: Consumption of peaches can suppress reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can lead to Oxidative stress. Sound bad? It is! A dramatic rise in ROS results in significant damage to cell structures, which can lead to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and even mutations in DNA! Hence, enjoying a peach this summer can not only be a yummy snack, but could even help provide you with protection from chronic diseases.
Brave Bananas: Last report we were hopeful that around this time of the year bananas would increase to around 60% of 2010 levels; well! Somebody's been good this year because we're happy to report bananas at 70-75%!!! Stock up on your potassium and reduce your risk of high blood pressure and stroke with a brave North Queensland banana. Positive reports on price & quality at market, so the humble banana is back on track! Expect a healthy bunch of bananas in your Box for now. Oranges On Guard:Time to say "Goodbye Navels" and "Hola!" to Valencias! These oranges are cunning; they don't want you to know what mouth-watering sweet/sour joy can be found just below their skin. They'll try to trick you by showing a green tinge to their skin; "I'm not ripe yet" it will plead but don't buy into it! Their camouflage from the sun & us is no longer secret. Amazing Apples, Killer Kiwi fruit and Ever-Popular Pears: Are available all year round; although, January is the start of new apple season, so expect a slight reduction in apples to your Box for this month. We have an abundance of Packham Pears (green) & Beurre Bosc Pears (Brown) through Christmas into January.
Craving a little something extra?
Magnificent Mangoes: Have you been staring out the window at work; daydreaming about fun in the sun? Invite a little of that tropical summer into the air-conditioned workplace with a tangy, sweet & juicy mango; who cares how sticky the mouse pad gets! Supplies moving from NT to tropical North QLD until the New Year, get some in whilst you can! Glistening Grapes: My fellow grape lovers: shocking news; Crops in QLD are down 50%. So, we are waiting for produce from our other suppliers in Mildura to start flourishing before we try to squeeze them into Boxes. This should start around January. Berry lovers rejoice! Strawberries are still available, for the addicted. However, due to rain, supplies can fluctuate weekly. Fear not; TFB refuses to supply substandard produce so we will replace strawberries with our brilliant blueberries- in good supply!
Charming Christmas CHERRIES! Consider a Premium Christmas Hamper for those clients and staff who didn't threaten, sue, harass or stress you this year! See our Website for details.
